Hitler marched into Austria (“Anschluss”); the Munich Pact allows Germany to partition Czechoslovakia; “Kristallnacht” purge of Jews – 30,000 arrested and sent to concentration camps.
Orson Welles broadcasts “War of the Worlds” sending USA into panic.
Teflon and the ballpoint pen invented.
January
The Bishop of Truro confirms 24 the preceding December, including 10 adults. “We must never forget that we are LEARNERS – daily increasing our knowledge of God. And the best way we can learn more of Him is by READING OUR BIBLES. If we live 1. Praying, 2. Worshipping, 3. FEEDING ON HIM through His Means of Grace and 4. READING OUR BIBLES …. then we shall be putting ourselves in the true way of becoming what we all ought to be – TRUE WITNESSES OF GOD.

The Sunday Schools, Girls Friendly Society and Mothers Union were reported to be in excellent health. The latter held its party in the Church Hall – then in Adelaide Street (until recently the Magistrates’ Court).

What was then unusual, the Curate, Rev. Marsden, ordained Priest in our church.
June
Commending the 400th Anniversary of the “Open Bible” – to be set up, in English, in every parish church – the Archbishop observed that ” we owe it to [the younger especially] to show that the best and surest modern knowledge has brought a grteat enrichment to our understanding of it”.
July
The Garden Sale of Work and Fete was held successfully in the Garden of the [then] Rectory.
September
Bellringers’, Choir and regular weekly Evening Excursions (attended by 60 or 70) were recorded.
October
A sombre Rector’s Letter reflected the increasingly critical international situation in Europe. However the new Choir Stalls and Screens (donated by the Chappel and Pendarves families) were dedicated by the Archdeacon.
December
Despite the worsening situation the Feast Social was held in the [then] Church Hall with a well attended and enthusiastic support of music and recitations (the Curate sang, Rev. Olive please note!), refreshments and games and amusements.
