What’s Afoot at the Church Hall?
Mirth and merriment abounded – what a fantastic evening!
Entertainment from the young to the more mature members of St. Martin’s on Saturday, 5th July – all under the banner of the “Firbank Follies!” Only one downside to the festivities, Mike, Kathryn and family couldn’t attend due to a small mishap to Paige – glad all is well now.
Under the guidance of Mr. G, we, the congregation, were asked to display any talents we may have been given to entertain others, but “only for five minutes, please” was the remit. Well, what a full evening the combined efforts produced! And what a varied programme it turned out to be – acts included singing, jokes, puppets, dancing, magic, instrumentals and a sketch and possibly the highlight, a guest artiste, Sabjee, who demonstrated Indian dancing – beautiful!
The event opened with that renowned act “Fringe and Tassel”, song and repartee. (Yours truly was the undercover agent, digging up facts and titbits to use about people in the audience – no-one was safe!). Josephine read us some poems and D.T. regaled us with Cornish anecdotes. Ken and Peter were hilarious as G. & S’s bold gendarmes, as were Ken and Jan in their version of “Chopsticks” and who would have thought Dorothy and Jan could be so catty – thanks to Rossini! Olive and Helen made two jolly matelots with their comic version of the hornpipe, and then Barbara joined Helen in a hoedown as the St. Martin’s Hillbillies (no rude comments about Grandma Clampet, please!).
The talented puppeteers, Sharon, Helen and Malcolm, offered us the parable of the Unforgiving Servant and Jason and his girls danced and sang to an item he had written himself – with Celia and Val backing as a gospel choir of twol Young Sam stepped in at the last minute, bless him, with a few original jokes. “A Hole in My Bucket” brought the house down – thanks to Edie and Margaret G. After seeing that pastry, don’t ever accept an invitation for a pasty supper at M.G’s!
Sabjee’s beautiful costume and dance kept us entranced, as did Malcolm’s prestidigitation, especially when he produced that item of ladies’ lingerie, assisted by Olive! Welcome refreshments were served by Susan, Jackie and Carol and musical accompaniment by Raymond. The evening ended with a sing-a-long of Cornish songs led by the Church Wives suitably decked out in Cornish colours.
The general feedback was that everyone enjoyed the Follies very much and “please can we have the same again next year – or more!” How about it, Mr. G?
