St Martin’s Church Wives
Let me open by saying that despite the ‘wives’ part of our title, we do indeed welcome any lady who wishes to join regardless of marital status!
The group was formed back in 1967 in order to welcome newcomers to Camborne via the church. We were then known as “Young Wives” but as we still have some founder members in our ranks, you will see why we dropped the “Young” from our name!
Members meet once a month, usually on the second Wednesday, and there are a variety of events, outings and talks to inform and entertain. We have had speakers and demonstrations on conservation, bird-watching, bee-keeping, Husky dog treks and ballet dancing (participation not necessary!). Cake decorating and bring-a-recipe evenings were a great success, especially as we could sample the wares! Outings to the theatre and Country Skittles are great fun, as are the annual Quiz night and Scavenger Hunt, Craft evenings really show off the ‘girls” talents )or lack of them!) when making cards, baskets or origami – ever tried making a giraffe out of one sheet of paper? – not easy! And as for the painting demo – Tracy Emin, eat your heart out! Our Christmas Dinner and March AGM (most informal) usually completes our year’s programme.
In case you were wondering where the ‘church’ part comes in, we do endeavour to invite Christian speakers from other churches and although our membership is quite small, about 33 at present, we do manage to contribute to several charities annually although our yearly subscription is only £3.
Suggestions for events and speakers for the following year are always welcomed at our AGM. Please feel free to come along and see if you would like to join. Please ring our Chairperson, Mrs Val Gill – 01209 716738 – for further information if you are interested.
